Aby Warburg’s Mnemosyne Atlas in Terms of the Mass Dissemination of Photographic Images and the Ordering of Images as Typologies and Taxonomies


Abstract


In recent years, Aby Warburg’s Mnemosyne Atlas has received widespread attention. Warburg is at the forefront of the discipline of art history, and his research overlaps with anthropology, ethnography, psychology, and biology. An important aspect of his method here is his relationship with photography as a means of implementing his research to build something similar to a chiastic structure (a memory technology system), which can be said to be Atlas and its library shelving form assumes structure. Warburg seeks for a continuum of hand gestures as an animation that re-energizes the past and the dead.
