Sharing with the gods: 'aparchai' and 'dekatai' in ancient Greece

Like the larger topic of gifts to the gods, the phenomenon of'first offerings' is understudied relative to its importance in the religious lives of the ancient Greeks. Aparchai ('first offerings') and dekatai ('tithes') have never been comprehensively treated. Ioanna Patera's recent Offrir en Grèce ancienne (Stuttgart, 2012) includes brief sections on these and related terms, yet until the publication of Theodora Suk Fong Jim's study, the only extended discussion was a chapter in H. D. Rouse's Greek votive offerings (Cambridge, 1902).
