Music in the Odes of Horace


Abstract


This book consists of three parts: in the first two, Stuart Lyons returns to the two arguments he made in his Horace's Odes and the Mystery of Do-Re-Mi (Oxford, 2007): Horace was not just a poet but a 'songwriter and entertainer' (p. 1), who regularly sang his odes to musical accompaniment; and a medieval melody written for Horace, Odes 4.11 was the origin of the mnemonic 'do-re-mi' still used today in teaching the notes of the musical scale. In the third part he describes and discusses other medieval manuscripts that include Horatian odes with neumes (musical notation).
